I drive about 10,000 kilometers a month as we are building a house about 1,800 kilometers from where we live. I make about a trip a month down east and my daughter plays a lot of hockey in the Greater Toronto Area. My car has almost 50,000 kms. since I got it late last fall and I feel that I can give a fair and balanced review. Yes, the mileage is great as long as the weather is not too cold, it gets much better in warmer weather. My only gripe is the GPS which conks out after 10 hours of driving- maybe it overheats, I am not sure. The one negative thing that caught me off guard was a tow truck driver who tried to intimidate me which filling up. He said that I was in the truck land-a..hole!

  • Good so far-first 3000km - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN

Happy with the car, mileage has been very good. Adding snow tires for the Canadian winter affected mileage by consuming an extra litre per 100km. The car is assembled in Mexico not Germany so we will see how long term reliabilty works out. You pay a premium for the TDI engine but the car is nicely equipped with heated leather seats, massive sunroof, trip computer, very good stereo. For the price VW should include automatic climate control and full power seats (currently only the drivers side has power for the back of the seat). That is nickel and dime type stuff by VW dub. Due to the great torque available from the TDI engine, this car is more driveable than the my wifes 5cyl gas Golf.

  • Never thought I would LOVE an efficient car! - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN

Im a car nut and I proclaim this THE PERFECT CAR!! The TDI motor #1 is why I love this car. I can drive 600 miles on a single tank, consistent 35-43 MPG at normal speeds. I dont baby my car, I like to have fun while I drive and yet it still gets 35+ mpg. On a weekend road trip it got 43mpg at 80mph. #2 is the Wagon and roof rack. A recent road trip to Steamboat Springs my wife and I had 2 road bikes inside and 2 mtn bikes on the rack plus gear. So flexible!! #3 This car is proof that selling my truck that was costing $300+/month gas was the right decision. I enjoy driving it more, it cut my gas usage by 1/3, and its plenty flexible to transport cargo and toys.

  • German Engineering in MEXICO? - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN

German Engineering? I was VERY dissappointed to find out (after purchasing ) that my car was assembled in Mexico with 35% of the parts made in Mexico also.Anything that is made from plastic can and will break. Be sure to lubricate the vents with armorall as if you dont they will stick and in my case break and just fall apart when trying to adjust them . aty 36,500 miles the the A/C compressor took a dump. 10,000 miles later it is on its way out again. I purchased it at Compass Motors in Middletown . I would not suggest buying anything from here as they do not like to stand by the factory warranty . They can and will try to take every penny out of your pocket . In 0ver 15x 4 repairs A+mpg

  • Beware of very expensive 40K service - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN

The MPG really drops if driving above 75mph. 40K service includes DSG transmission fluid drain, and it costs $$$$. Back seat tight for 3 adults. Impossible for 2 Adults+baby seat.

just turned 2k miles goes like a scalded dog-- have avg 39.6 miles over all and have achieved 53.4 driving home from my lake cabin in nw wis. with a tailwind to the twin-cities--avg. normally about 47-- i am 6-1 inch and 220 pounds fits like a glove -- looked at Outback wagon but i aldready have 2 other 4 wheel drives a Trooper & 2010 hemi ram pickup--it replaced a 2006 JEEP wrangler which held its value like none other i figured that this TDI will also hold its value

  • Love it....so far - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN

Really like this car. 43,000 miles in ten months. I love this car but I do admit the fuel pump problem scares me, VW needs to put its buyers at ease by covering this issue. Knock on wood this car has been great. I averahe 44 mpg. 48 on highway.

  • What a family car should be - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN
    By -

Weve had our wagon for 1.5 years, and have logged 47K miles, in harsh Maine environments of rough gravel roads, very rough paved roads, salty winter roads, ice, mud, and one cross country and back trip. Excellent in snow, havent crashed it yet. Ive driven it through 12" of snow, plowing a path. The heavy diesel right over the wheels makes it better than a 4x4 on ice, with proper tires. Loaded w/family & gear, at 80, mileage is 38. 70 its 46. 65 its 49. 55 its 51. Everyone likes to drive, or ride in this car. Nothing on the market compares. Buy one.

  • Overall, Very Happy with the Sportwagen TDI - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN
    By -

I spend lots of time researching and test driving cars, as I am a Mechanical Engineer. It was thus not without lots of contemplation that I purchased a 2011 Sportwagen TDI to replace my 10 year old trusty Honda CRV with 170K miles. Overall, I am happy. Some things are better than I expected, while there are a few minor things that are areas for improvement. This car comes into its own on long highway trips, where it seems most efficient, and has a solid controlled feel to it. With all the torque from the diesel, the DSG rarely needs to downshift and pulls upgrade hills at 1700rpm like a tractor (the honda by comparison on same roads downshift and wines at 4000rpm)
